§ Look at current presidential news off Internet
§ Discuss Obama ads off You Tube videos, and compare to McCain ads that we saw last week
§ Discuss Election, based upon on-line news

Tuesday

§ Look at current presidential news off Internet (continued)
§ Discuss Election progress, based upon on-line news (continued)
§ Distribute worksheet on presidential campaign/election process

Wednesday

§ Discuss voting qualifications in Illinois and election process
§ Electoral College

Thursday

§ Discuss voting qualifications in Illinois and election process (continued)
§ Electoral College
§ Discuss 2004 election – popular vote vs. electoral college
§ Introduce campaign slogans and slurs

Friday

§ Adverb PowerPoint Writing Activity
§ Poetry PowerPoint in class
§ Introduce poetry terms of end rhyme, assonance, alliteration, symbolism, and metaphor
§ Work on Autumn leaf poems
§ Assign students to write two more poems utilizing poetry terms learned in class

Tuesday

§ Introduce Walt Whitman & Emily Dickinson
§ Assign students to read poems by Whitman & Dickinson as homework
§ Read in class

Wednesday

§ Discuss Whitman & Dickinson poems, including poetry devices
§ Introduce Maya Angelou, Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill.

Thursday

§ Research biographies of Maya Angelou, Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill in computer lab

Friday

§ Happy Halloween!!!!
§ Distribute additional handouts on Maya Angelou, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill
§ Discuss Maya Angelou, Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill
§ Encourage discussion of rap music and its lyrics to set guidelines for what will be acceptable o share in the classroom
§ Distribute copies of Angelou’s essay “They Came to Stay.” Read the essay together and discuss the images of black women that Angelou presents. What negative images is she trying to counter? From where do these negative stereotypes come?

8th Grade Language Arts – Bellringer Powerpoint #21 - in class. Collect outline on “Why go to School.” Nouns Packet - will work on in class.

8h Grade Social Studies – Finish PowerPoints - in class. No homework.
